A task force, led by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, has released new recommendations to reduce risks related to athletic conditioning, according to a Health Day report. The guidelines are intended to equip physicians, coaches and athletes with strategies for preventing sudden deaths among younger athletes. They include the following recommendations:

•    Introduce new conditioning activities slowly.
•    Do not use conditioning activities as punishment.
•    Strength and conditioning coaches and medical staff should undergo continuing education to better understand safe condition of young athletes.
•    Athletes should have access to medical supervision.

The guidelines were introduced at NATA's annual meeting in St. Louis.
