Robert Shugart, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Fort Wayne Orthopedics in Indiana. He is also affiliated with Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne. He is actively involved in stem cell research. Along with his colleague, Kevin Rahn, MD, Dr. Shugart is researching the effectiveness of injecting mesenchymal precursor stem cells into the center of the target disc for patients with moderate lumbar degenerative disc disease with the Mesoblast procedure.
He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and completed his residency at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minn. Dr. Shugart completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the San Francisco Spine Institute in Daly City, Calif.
Dr. Shugart is affiliated with many medical societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Fort Wayne Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, International Society for Minimal Intervention Spinal Surgery, North American Spine Society and Scoliosis Research Society.
