Barriers still remain to pain management for pediatric patients with chronic and acute pain, according to a symposium at PAINWeek 2012. In the symposium, Deborah Ward, PharmaD, BCOP, BCPS, a clinical pharmacy specialist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., argued that limited FDA testing in children and limited provider knowledge on steps to relieve pediatric patients' pain contributes to these barriers.
Dr. Ward acknowledged that the field has come a long way over the past several years, but said pediatric patients still often receive inadequate treatment for pain. She said some providers fear adverse effects when using pain medication in children, or think that infants and children can't feel pain, which leads to inadequate treatment.
