Scientists at Stanford and UCSF will conduct two clinical trials to test the use of ultrasound waves to ease pain in cancer patients whose cancer has metastasized to their bones, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.
Ultrasound is being considered as an alternative to radiation therapy, and previous studies have shown substantial improvement in pain control after radiation therapy failed to work. Radiologists leading the research don't think ultrasound will replace radiation but rather become "another tool in the toolbox."
