MedShape Solutions, an Atlanta-based medical device company focused on shape memory orthopedic devices, has received the Small Business Innovation Research Phase I grant from the National Institutes of Health to support its research, according to a MedShape Solutions news release.
The research and development is focused on a compliant shape memory device for meniscal repair. Additional funding phases could mean the total award would equal over $1.5 million if the company achieves the target Phase I development milestones.
The company is developing crescent-shaped pads of fibrocartilage located between the femur and tibia to act as shock absorbers preventing friction between the bones. The pads also help with stabilization and protect articular cartilage on the impacted surfaces.
