Atlanta-based orthopedic device company MedShape has received a United States patent for its shape memory polymer-based technology, according to a MedShape news release.
The shape memory polymers are advanced materials that can retain more than one shape and easily transition between different shapes with minimal exertion or loss of mechanical integrity. The devices can be inserted into the surgical site in a temporary compact geometry and then triggered to deploy different, permanent geometry to the site.
The technology can adapt to the implantation site and respond to implant loading to maintain secure fixation with respect to various challenging conditions.
