Eugene Carragee, MD, has been chief of the division of spinal surgery at Stanford University Hospitals & Clinics in Redwood City, Calif. He also serves as medical director of the orthopedic spine center and service quality at Stanford.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Carragee also serves as a spine consultant for NCAA teams and director of medical student education in the department of orthopedic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has also served as editor-in-chief of the North American Spine Society's The Spine Journal.
Dr. Carragee has a professional interest in adult spine care, specifically spinal reconstructive surgery, cervical and lumbar disk and fusion surgery, spinal tumor treatment and spinal deformity treatment. He has received the Outstanding Research Award and Leon Wiltse Award from NASS and published several articles in professional journals. Dr. Carraggee's research has also received honors from the International Spine Society.
Before his time at Stanford, Dr. Carragee trained in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a public health officer, Battalion and Command Surgeon as well as a Forward Surgical Team Commander. He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Carragee earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. He also completed a fellowship in spine and pediatric surgery at the University of Hong Kong, Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital in China.
