2 recent orthopedic surgeon suspensions

Orthopedic

Becker's in the last two weeks reported on two orthopedic surgeons who had their licenses suspended:

1. The North Carolina Medical Board suspended orthopedic surgeon Eric Brietbart, MD, indefinitely for writing fradulent prescriptions. Dr. Brietbart was charged with writing the fraudulent prescriptions for several friends and coworkers at UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, N.C., the report said. In February and July, the N.C. Medical Board received two letters from Dr. Breitbart that acknowledged the inappropriate prescriptions. He is no longer working with or affiliated with UNC Health Southeastern.

2. Fairbanks, Alaska-based orthopedic surgeon Timothy Carey, DO, owner of McKinley Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine, had his license suspended for five days on Nov. 17 and remains under investigation by the state medical board. While his suspension was vacated on Nov. 22, it does not impact the four ongoing investigations against Dr. Carey. The petition for suspension alleges that Dr. Carey violated regulations in Alaska's Administrative Code by either failing to keep accurate records, harassing staff or patients or professional incompetence.
