Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. James Schwender of Twin Cities Spine

James D. Schwender, MD, is a staff surgeon at Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis. During his career, Dr. Schwender has served as president for the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and is a fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Schwender is also a member of the North American Spine Society. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgical techniques and treating patients with scoliosis, trauma and tumors. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Schwender has been a review for the SAS Journal, now known as the International Journal of Spine Surgery. He has published his research in several professional journals, including Spine and the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.

Dr. Schwender's previous appointments include clinical instructor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota in the department of orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Schwender earned his medical degree from State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Vermont. His additional training includes a spine fellowship at Twin Cities Spine Center.
