David M. Joyner, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in sports medicine and a business consultant, has been named acting athletics director at Penn State University, according to a USA Today report.
Dr. Joyner is a former football player and wrestler at Penn State, and he currently sits on the university's board of directors. He is replacing Tim Curley, who is currently on administrative leave for his alleged involvement in Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal. School administrators hope the new appointment will improve communication between the athletic department and the rest of the school, according to the report.
Dr. Joyner earned his medical degree at Penn State and has experience as a team physician for the Olympics. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
