Red Sox Shake Up Medical Provider Model

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The Red Sox have announced the team will eliminate the medical director position, previously held by Tom Gill, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital, in favor of a new medical provider model, according to a Boston Globe report. While the team will continue to retain services of Massachusetts General Hospital, the new medical care model will include some different specialists than in previous years and a different head team physician. The change comes on the heal of multiple incidences in recent years where players were diagnosed with minor injuries by team physicians, but those injuries were classified as major injuries by outside physicians.

The team has also fired its strength and condition coach and assistant trainer.
