Study Examines Elite Female Athlete ACL Tears

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Elite female athletes who have suffered anterior cruciate ligament tears have higher serum relaxin concentrations and increased chance of risking an additional tear than female athletes who haven't had ACL tears, according to a study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers gathered results from 128 Division I collegiate female athletes. Approximately 21.9 percent of the athletes suffered an ACL tear during the four year study period and the average SRC for these athletes was 6 pg/mL, compared with athletes who didn't have ACL tears (1.8 pg/mL).

The athletes with ACL tears were at a four times greater risk for additional ACL tears.
