William Sterett, MD, a former partner at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., is suing the clinic over his termination, which occurred in June, according to a Vail Daily report.
Dr. Sterett, who now practices at Vail-Summit Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine, alleges The Steadman Clinic fired him in May without supplying him with the cause and he was terminated June 10. According to a statement released by The Steadman Clinic CEO Lyon Steadman, Dr. Sterett had previously made several unsupported allegations about the clinic and its members. Dr. Sterett was also reportedly involved in a HIPAA violation earlier this year, a claim which he disputes.
Dr. Sterett claims he was not allowed enough time to meet the needs of his patients, who had visits through Aug. 31, and has been prevented from seeing his former patients because the clinic removed him from its insurance provider contracts. The lawsuit seeks judgments and monetary damages as well as $61,347 to compensate him for his ownership stake in the clinic.
"Without advance notice, The Steadman Clinic learned prior to the close of business on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, its former member, William Sterett, M.D., filed suit against the Clinic and its managers regarding the monetary issues stemming from his termination from the Clinic on June 30, 2011. Up until July 26, the Clinic and Dr. Sterett had been in discussions to amicably resolve outstanding issues, including Dr. Sterett's contractual obligations to the Clinic regarding his continued practice of medicine in Vail Valley. While the Clinic had conceded much during these negotiations, we were not willing to concede any more to demands that we believed were unreasonable. During those discussions, the Clinic sought to hold Dr. Sterett to signed agreements. The next day, the suit was filed...The Clinic believes that its rights and actions will be fully vindicated in this lawsuit," reads a portion of the statement released by The Steadman Clinic.
