At the concussion of the Ice Hockey Summit on Concussion: A Call to Action, Mayo Clinic released recommendations for scientists, trainers, coaches, officials and equipment manufacturers about preventing and managing concussions for youth athletes, according to a Mayo news release.
The summit identified six areas of focus for concussion management and prevention:
1. Develop standardized database and metrics
2. Enhance recognition, diagnosis, management and return-to-play guidelines
3. Analyze the influence of equipment and facilities
4. Mandate education for coaches, parents, players and officials
5. Eliminate head contact and teach body contact and checking to young ages, but postpone using it in games until age 13
6. Collect concussion data using consistent, hockey-specific definition in well-designed studies
This summer, Mayo Clinic in Arizona made baseline concussion testing available free of charge to several high school student athletes.
