Study: PRP Shows Same Results as Saline Injection for Achilles Tendon

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

A randomized, controlled trial of platelet-rich plasma injections for Achilles tendon repair showed no clinical and ultrasonographic advantages over a placebo injection, according to a study published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Researchers examined 54 patients with chronic tendinopathy 2-7 centimeters proximal to the Achilles tendon. They either received a blind injection containing PRP or saline.

The average Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment-Achilles score improved in both groups after one year. In both groups, 59 percent of the patients were satisfied with their treatment. Ultrasonographic tendon structure also equally improved in both groups.
