At the 10th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago on June 14, Steven S. Shin, MD, director of hand surgery at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, and John Seitz, chairman and CEO of Ambulatory Surgical Group, discussed complex hand cases in the ASC. Dr. Shin provided a surgeons' perspective on complex hand cases in an ASC, while Mr. Seitz provided a business perspective.
According to Dr. Shin, most complex hand cases can be performed in an ASC with little postoperative complications and very high patient satisfaction. In fact, Dr. Shin said he performs more than 99 percent of his cases in an ASC. "If I could do every single one of my cases in a surgery center, I would," he said.
According to Mr. Seitz, hand cases require relatively low capital investment and yield high revenue. "We like these cases. They're quick, not complicated and margins are good. In today's environment, that's key," he said.
