Sports Medicine Physicians Urge Better Understanding of Biologics

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Sports medicine physicians and surgeons play a critical role in the advancement of the field and delivery of care, according to a new article published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. The article's authors, including physicians from Hospital for Special Surgery and the National University of Ireland, recommend an increased understanding of the challenges associated with regenerative surgery while also leading the way in the advancement of biological strategies for sports medicine care.

"In many cases, surgical efforts targeted at restoring normal anatomy and functional status are ultimately impaired by the biological aspect of the natural history of these injuries, which acts as an obstacle to satisfactory repair process after surgery," the authors wrote. "The clinical management of sports injuries and the delivery of appropriate surgical intervention are continuously evolving, and it is likely the principles of regenerative medicine will have an increasing effect in the specialized field of orthopedic practice going forward."
