Delaying reconstructive ACL surgery for adolescent patients may increase the risk of further injury, according to a research article published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine.
The study examined 70 patients who were 14 years old or younger. Each patient presented an ACL injury at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia over a 10-year period, where 29 of the patients underwent reconstructive surgery more than 12 weeks after the injury occurred. These patients who delayed surgery had a higher rate of serious irreversible injuries, such as meniscal tears and full thickness cartilage injuries.
