North American Spine Society Names Dr. Michael Heggeness 2011-2012 President

Michael H. Heggeness, MD, was recently named the 2011-2012 president of the North American Spine Society, according to a NASS news release. Dr. Heggeness is a professor of orthopedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. His practice focuses on treating patients with cervical spine disorders and inflammatory disease of the spine. In addition to his clinical practice, his research focuses on engineering of bone and the role of intraosseous nerves in human disease.

Dr. Heggeness earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. His additional training includes a fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada.

According to the release, Dr. Heggeness plans to increase attention o the basic science of spine and reach out to the society's international membership during his presidency.
