Bipedicular kyphoplasty can restore vertebral height more quickly than unipedicular kyphoplasty, although the gap between the two closes quickly, according to a study published in the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.
Researchers studied 50 patients with 56 chronic painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures for an average of two years after surgery. The patients were either treated with unipedicular or bipedicular kyphoplasty.
Significant improvement in the visual analog scale and Oswestry disability index were reported by both groups. Restoration rate among patients with bipedicular kyphoplasty was higher more immediately after surgery, and the height loss ratio showed no significant difference at six months or two years.
