The Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery has teamed with Germany-based spine device company joimax to create and launch the SMISS Spine Registry for Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Spine Surgery, according to an SMISS news release.
joimax has agreed to support the registry as a founding sponsor. The registry is designed to collect data concerning decreased hospitalization, recovery times and complication rates for endoscopic spine procedures when compared with traditional open procedures. The registry will also keep track of data such as quality of life measures, subject satisfaction and cost-effectiveness.
Choll Kim, MD, PhD, SMISS executive director, will be the principle investigator for the registry, which will begin as a three-year, multi-center project. Surgeons could begin patient enrollment in the registry by the end of the year, and they expect to enroll at least 250 patients during the first phase of the project.
