A retrospective analysis of fusion cases submitted by the Scoliosis Research Society over three years showed that bone morphogenic protein use with anterior cervical fusion increases the incidence of complications, however BMP use isn't associated with more complications during posterior and thoracolumbar cervical fusions, according to a report in Spine.
There were a total of 55,862 cases included in the study, and surgeons used BMP in 21 percent of the cases. In all cases beyond anterior cervical fusions, there was no significant difference in complications, wound infections or epidural hematomas/seromas with and without BMP use.
Among anterior cervical fusion patients, there were more overall complications and wound infection among patients who received BMP.
