Study: Unbiased SPORT Patient Video Helps Patients With Treatment Decisions

Spine

After watching the patient video used in the Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial, patients with lumbar spine disorders were able to form or strengthen their treatment preferences in a balanced and unbiased manner, according to a study published in Spine. The study included 2,505 patients with intervertebral disc herniation, spinal stenosis or degenerative spondylolisthesis who were enrolled in SPORT at 13 different spine centers. There were 2,151 (86 percent) patients who watched the video and 354 who did not.

Researchers found that the patients who watched the videos shifted their preference more often than those who did not. The video watchers also demonstrated a strengthened preference. There were 806 patients who switched their treatment preference after watching the video, with 55 percent switching toward surgery.

There were 617 patients who began the process without any preference. After watching the video, 51 percent remained uncertain, 27 percent preferred non-operative care and 22 percent preferred surgery.
