Study: Endoscopic Assistance is Helpful for Microsurgery

Spine

Arachnoscopy can be a helpful adjunct to microsurgery to detect additional adhesions in the subarachnoid space, according to a study published in Spine.

A single neurosurgeon performed 27 consecutive microsurgical procedures with endoscopic assistance in 25 patients with spinal arachnoid adhesions. In all procedures, cerebrospinal fluid flow obstructions were detected at the level identified by MRI.

Image quality was sufficient for an inspection of the adjacent subarachnoid space in 25 procedures, and in six cases the surgeon detected further adhesions obstructing the CSF flow in the adjacent subarachnoid space that weren't visualized with the microscope. The additional adhesions were removed during microsurgery.
