5 Statistics on Ambulatory Spine Care From 1999 to 2008

The September issue of Spine included statistics on spending related to ambulatory spine care from 1999 to 2008, according to US News Health. Here are five statistics on spine treatment costs.

•    In 2008, 6 percent of adults made an ambulatory care visit for back or neck problems, totaling 14 million
•    Medical spending on spinal care per patient increased 95 percent, from $487 to $950
•    Most spending came from treatment from by specialists; little change came from primary care physicians or general practitioners
•    Approximately $90 billion is spent on diagnosis and management of low back pain
•    Back pain is the second most common reason for medical visits, after upper respiratory infections.
