The standard posterolateral thoracic corpectomy can be modified with diagonal temporary rod fixation, which allows for simultaneous bilateral access for vertebral body resection, according to a study published in the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.
Researchers examined eight patients who received a temporary fixation cross-rod between the cephalad and caudad contralateral pedicle screws. The technique allowed two surgeons to access the vertebral bodies simultaneously, which decreased operative time and blood loss.
There were no complications related to the temporary fixation during the procedures and no translational movement was recorded.
