Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Ivan Cheng of Stanford University Medical Center

Ivan Cheng, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal disorders, including cervical spine and complex spinal deformities. He is the orthopedic surgery residency program director and chair of the education committee in the orthopedic surgery department at Stanford University. He is trained in minimally invasive and motion-preserving surgeries. Dr. Cheng performs cervical and lumbar spine surgery, as well as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. He also offers patients conservative care such as physiotherapy, integrative medicine, acupuncture and chiropractic care.

He has been conducting research using stem cells for spinal cord injury for the past five years at Stanford. His research interests include biologic enhancement for spinal fusions, molecular techniques of intervertebral disc regeneration and techniques of spinal instrumentation.

Dr. Cheng has received many awards, including the Timothy Bray Trauma Award for UC Davis, the Saul Halpern Orthopaedic Teacher of the Year Award from Stanford, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine prize in clinical research and Outstanding Paper Awards for the North American Spine Society.

He completed his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass. He finished his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California Davis and his spine surgery fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.
