Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Carl Lauryssen of Tower Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine

Carl Lauryssen, MD, is board-certified neurosurgeon by both the American and the Canadian Boards of Neurological Surgery. He is the co-director of spine research and development at Olympia Medical Center in Los Angeles. His research and surgical interests focus on minimally invasive surgery and motion preservation. Dr. Lauryssen has twice won the young investigator award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons for his work on cervical disorders and stem cell research. He was also among the first neurosurgeons to inject stem cells into a human spinal cord as part of an FDA trial.

Dr. Lauryssen previously served on the faculty at Washington University where he directed the advanced neurosurgical spine program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. In addition to his clinical work and research, he has participated in device development and holds multiple patents and inventions currently used by spine surgeons across the country.

He received his medical degree at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and completed a neurosurgical residency at University of Calgary, Alberta in Canada. His additional training includes a fellowship in spinal neurosurgical surgery at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
