Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Praveen Mummaneni of University of California San Francisco Department of Neurological Surgery

Praveen Mummaneni, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon at the University of California San Francisco. He is the director the of cervical spine program, director of the minimally invasive spine program, director of the minimally invasive and complex spine fellowship program, co-director of UCSF's Spine Center and vice-chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. He specializes in complex cervical spine surgery and in minimally invasive spine surgery for a variety of conditions, including degenerative spondylolisthesis, stenosis, spinal tumors and spinal trauma.

Dr. Mummaneni has been a guest lecturer at international meetings in Brazil, India, Japan, Taiwan and Korea and has published more than 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He is the editor of several textbooks, including "Spinal Deformity: A Guide to Surgical Planning and Management," "Handbook of Minimally Invasive and Percutaneous Spine Surgery" and "Handbook of Spine Surgery."

He was among the first neurosurgeons to obtain active membership in the Scoliosis Research Society's Edgar Dawson Memorial Scholarship and the SRS Traveling Fellowship Award. Previously, he served as scientific program chair and annual meeting chair of the AANS-CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.

Dr. Mummaneni earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency in neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. His additional training includes a complex spine fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta.
