Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Scott D. Boden of Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center in Atlanta

Scott Boden, MD, is a professor of orthopedic surgery and the director of the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center in Atlanta. His areas of clinical interest include cervical fusion, anterior lumbar interbody fusion, disc degeneration, lumbar fusion, spinal infections and more. His treatment specialties are discectomy, kyphoplasty, microdiscectomy and microdecompression, spinal fusion and vertebroplasty. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1986 and completed his internship and residency at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Boden completed a spine fellowship at Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland.

Dr. Boden holds at least six different patents for medical devices and his research focuses on spine fusion, spinal disorders and bone regeneration. More than 150 of his journal articles have been published, and he has authored or edited more than 42 book chapters and nine books on spine topics.

His approach to correcting spinal problems is patient-driven. "Too often patients tell me that their last physician just looked at their x-rays and told them that they needed surgery," he said. "I try to emphasize listening to the patient, examining the patient and working together with the patient to decide on the best treatment option for that individual."


Dr. Boden is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is affiliated with the North American Spine Society, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and Orthopaedic Research Society. He is also a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
