Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Christopher Silva of Rockford Spine Center

Spine Leaders

Christopher Silva, MD, is a partner of Rockford (Ill.) Spine Center with a special interest in performing complex revision spine surgery. He treats patients with herniated discs, spinal stenosis and other degenerative conditions, as well as spinal tumors and trauma. His additional experience includes minimally invasive spinal surgery. "Minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS) is loosely defined as any spinal surgery that attempts to minimize tissue damage caused by the surgical approach," says Dr. Silva. "MISS is therefore a term attached to notate the modification of a surgical approach for a given spinal procedure, as opposed to significantly modifying other aspects of a given procedure. Therefore, while the specific surgical approach differs between traditional, open surgery and MISS, the end goals of both techniques are the same."

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Silva is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. He is also a member of the North American Spine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Illinois State Medical Society.

During his career, Dr. Silva's research has focused on several spine-related topics, including cervical disc arthroplasty and outcomes for treating degenerative lumbar scoliosis. He has given presentations around the country on spine surgery for various professional societies.

Dr. Silva earned his medical degree at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. His additional training includes a fellowship in spine surgery at William Beaumont in Royal Oak, Mich.
