Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. John Heller of The Emory Spine Center

John Heller, MD, is an orthopedic and spine surgeon at The Emory Spine Center in Atlanta and a professor of orthopaedic surgery with Emory Healthcare. He is the orthopedic surgery and spine fellowship director at Emory Healthcare. Dr. Heller specializes in the research and development of instrumentation in cervical spine surgery, including disc arthroplasty and laminoplasty plates. During his career, Dr. Heller received awards for his research from the Cervical Spine Research Society and was a Kashiwagi-Sukuki Traveling Fellow.

His areas of clinical interest include anterior lumbar interbody fusion, cervical fusion, compression fractures, disc degeneration, spinal stenosis, spinal trauma, spine surgery and more. He is a past-president of the Cervical Spine Research Society and has served in leadership roles with North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

He attended medical school at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed an internship and residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, studying under Henry Bohlman, MD, a pioneer in modern spine surgery. He was a spine fellow at the University of California Medical Center in San Diego.
