Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, MD, is the chief of the scoliosis service at Hospital for Special Surgery and founder and president of the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine — and organization focused on providing orthopedic and spine care to underserved populations in Ghana. The organization recently opened an orthopedic specialty hospital in Ghana with help from more than 1,800 donors and a grant from the Ghanaian government. "FOCOS's mission is to provide affordable orthopedic care to those who would not otherwise have access to such treatment," Dr. Boachie-Adjei said. "The patients we treat both surgically and nonsurgically have disabling musculoskeletal disorders including complex spine deformities and pediatric orthopedic problems."

Dr. Boachie-Adjei was born in Ghana and founded FOCOS in 1998. Since then, the organization has treated more than 17,000 local and international patients, performing more than 800 surgeries. For his efforts, Dr. Boachie-Adjei has received the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Humanitarian Award and the Science and Peace Gold Medal (Humanitarian Award) from the Albert Schwitzer International University in Switzerland.

During his career, Dr. Boachie Adjei has been president of the Scoliosis Research Society. He holds several patents for devices used in spine surgery. His research focuses on clinical outcomes studies in scoliosis and other spinal deformities, as well as gene therapy for spinal fusion.
