How Does Pain Management Physicians' Compensation Stack Up: A Comparison to Physicians in Other Top ASC Specialties

Pain Management

Pain management was the fourth most common specialty in ambulatory surgery centers with 17 percent of overall case volume, according to VMG Health's Multi-Specialty ASC Intellimarker 2011. Using compensation data from MGMA's Physician Compensation and Production Survey 2011 Report Based on 2010 Data, see how pain management physicians compare with physicians from the other top five ASC specialties by case volume: GI/Endoscopy (29 percent), ophthalmology (17 percent), orthopedics (17 percent) and ENT (8 percent).
Overall compensation
Of the top five specialties, orthopedic surgeons made the most followed by anesthesia pain management physicians who made more than $35,000 less. Non-anesthesia pain management physicians made less than all of the other top five specialties by about $5,000.

Pain management (anesthesia): $502,024
Pain management (non-anesthesia): $371,481
GI/Endoscopy: $496,874
Ophthalmology: $376,943

Single-specialty
When looking at compensation in single-specialty practices, non-anesthesia pain management physicians made more than $50,000 more than the lowest-compensated physicians: otorhinolaryngologists (ENT). Anesthesia pain management physicians made the most by just over $4,000 above gastroenterologists/endoscopists.

Pain management (anesthesia): $478,517

However, non-anesthesia pain management physicians earn the least in multi-specialty practices, earning more than $5,000 less than ophthalmologists and more than $81,000 less than their single-specialty counterparts.

Pain management (anesthesia): $532,814
