The New York State Department of Health has overturned a 2011 coverage policy that stopped payments under Medicaid for arthroscopic knee surgeries, according to an AAOS Now report. In its decision, the department pointed to the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons' clinical practice guidelines for treating knee arthritis. However, AAOS responded that the department misinterpreted the association's guidelines, which recommended not performing knee arthroscopies with débridement or lavage in patients with a primary diagnosis of symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee, according to the report. The association recommended the department retool the coverage policy to better reflect a narrower guideline.
In April, the state followed the association's recommendations and will pay for knee arthroscopies.
