Here are 10 hospitals working on new initiatives in orthopedics and spine surgery. 1. Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., is considering implementing a specialized operating room team for knee surgery after it realized the benefits of having the same team of anesthesiologists and surgical professionals working together in a 2010 collaborative analyzing high-volume, high-cost medical procedures.
2. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston has opened a new Orthopedics Sports Performance Center in Foxborough, Mass., that combines three dimensional biomechanical imaging technology with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, biomechanists, biomedical engineers, performance trainers, nutritionists, athletic trainers and coaches to help athletes recover from and prevent injuries as well as improve performance.

Twelve hospitals in Michigan have partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for a new initiative to bundle total hip and knee replacements and the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative will collect data from the hospitals and develop best practices for the procedures.
4. The physicians of Vanderbilt Medical Group in Nashville, Tenn., Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Knoxville (Tenn.) Orthopaedic Clinic and the Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance in Nashville have made a bundled payment agreement with BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee for total hip and knee replacements, which will cover the total cost of care for patients for the first 90 days post surgery.

Bremerton, Wash.-based Harrison Medical Center has broken ground on a new 54,000-square-foot Harrison Orthopaedic Hospital at Silverdale that will include four dedicated orthopedic operating rooms, 16 pre- and post-surgical rooms and 24 private rooms with space for additional 24 rooms in the future.
6. PinnacleHealth in Harrisburgh, Pa., is developing a new strategic plan to create a highly integrated system of care that includes construction of a new $150 million facility that will include orthopedic services and improvements to Community General Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburgh.
7. Orlando Health has opened the new Wyatt Whitney Hip & Orthopedic Institute in Orlando that houses the International Hip Dysplasia Institute for gathering information and providing guidance for families affected by hip dysplasia and training for orthopedic surgeons.
8. Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian's Neurosciences Institute in Newport Beach, Calif., has formed a co-management agreement with DISC Sports & Spine Center to develop a minimally invasive neurosurgical spine program.
9. Victory Healthcare in Woodlands, Texas, is planning to open Victory Medical Center in Plano with five operating rooms where surgeons can perform spine, hip and knee surgery in addition to imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services.
10. Rapid City, S.D.-based Regional Health has opened its Regional Rehabilitation and Regional Sports Medicine facility in Spearfish that includes care for athletes and treatment for injuries related to sports, exercise or recreation.
