The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council's most recent report shows that the state is following the national trend of increased joint replacement and spinal fusion procedures.
According to Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society President Greg Gallant, MD, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that total hip replacement demand will increase 175 percent by 2030, while total knee replacements will grow six-fold. He suggests advancement in orthopedic technology will be able to accommodate this increase over the next several years in an organization news release..
The PHC4 report showed that Pennsylvania's total joint replacement rate was slightly higher than the national average and in line with national trends for spine procedures. The state ranks fourth in the United States by percentage of population age 65 and older.
