AAOS: 5 Updates on Debridement Coding

As part of the 2011 CPT code changes, there are several updates for coding wound debridement, according to an AAOS Now report.

The report includes updates for wound debridement not associated with open fracture or dislocation and excisional debridement with open fractures.

The updates for debridement with open fracture or dislocation include:

1. Coders are now required to document the depth of the tissue debridement and wound size in square centimeters, according to the report.

2. CPT Codes 11040-11041 are deleted and the new add-on codes 11045, 11046 and 11047 have been added.

3. CPT codes 11042-11044 describing the wound size have been revised to represent the first 20 square centimeters. The add-on codes 11045-11047 are reported for additional length.

The updates for excisional debridement with open fractures include:

4. The CPT codes 11010-11012 describe excisional debridement of the traumatized, ischemic, hard and soft tissue and foreign material.

5. For describing the depth, coders can use CPT 11010 for skin/subcutaneous tissue, CPT 11011 for skin/subcutaneous tissue and fascia/muscle and CPT 11012 for skin/subcutaneous tissue and fascia/muscle with bone.
