30 New Spine Device Launches and Releases

Spinal Tech

Here is a list of 30 spine devices recently launched, released or introduced to the market. Many of the devices were introduced or on display at the North American Spine Society annual meeting in November or at other professional meetings around the world. The devices are listed in alphabetical order by device company.

Alphatec Spine introduced the Trestle Luxe Anterior Cervical Plating System. The system includes its proprietary zero-step locking mechanism, low-profile flush-fit design, large graft window, implants and instrumentation.

Alphatec Spine introduced the Solus Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion System, which is designed for spinal column stability for internal fixation ALIF devices. The system also decreases incision size, operative time and blood loss.

Alphatec Spine also introduced the Avalon Occipito-Cervico Plating System, used in connection with the Solanas Posterior Cervico-Thoracic Fixation System, for posterior occipito-cervico-thoracic fixation.

Finally, Alphatec Spine introduced the Epicage Minimally Invasive Posterior Interbody Spacer, which can be used for TLIF or PLIF procedures. The resting cage has a crescent shape but can be flexed into straight and narrow shapes.

Globus Medical recently launched the Caliber, a vertically expandable lumbar fusion device for use during minimally invasive spine surgery to restore disc height with controlled distraction. Surgeons insert the device at a contracted height to reduce the amount of nerve root retraction required.

Globus Medical launched the InterContinental Plate-Spacer, which is the second generation of the company's minimally invasive lateral fixation device designed to compressively load the graft that helps promote fusion.

Finally, Globus Medical launched the SP-Fix, a spinous process fixation device designed to provide structural stability, indirect decompression and immobilization of the adjacent spinous processes while also preserving the supraspinous ligament.

Integra LifeScience released the Integra Complete Cervical Intervertebral Body Fusion Device, a zero-profile, stand-alone cervical IBD. The device is cleared by the FDA and is designed to help provide stability for spinal fusion.

Integra LifeScience announced the limited release of the Integra Steerable Intervertebral Body Fusion Device, which is designed as an intuitive minimally invasive system for thoracolumbar spinal fixation procedures.

Integra LifeScience introduced the NewPort Minimally Invasive Spinal System to the market. The system is designed for a percutaneous approach for spinal procedures and combines with the company's Malibu System implants.

joimax recently presented the Multiuse-Set for endoscopic facet joint denervation.

K2M debuted the Blue Ridge Hybrid Cervical Plate System that uses technology it acquired from Amendia. The hybrid cervical plate system uses a nitinol locking mechanism that emerges seamlessly during screw insertion and requires no additional locking steps.

K2M launched the Everest Degenerative Spinal System globally, which is a top-loading pedicle screw system featuring titanium and cobalt chrome rods. The system also includes a screw thread pitch designed to maximize osteoporotic and dense bone fixation.

K2M announced the global launch of its Ravine Lateral Access System, which initially debuted last year. The system provides a dual flat blade platform for less invasive muscle splitting transpsoas approach.

K2M debuted its Chesapeake Cervical-Ti Stabilization System, a multi-screw construct designed to provide stability to the anterior column while reducing the need for supplemental fixation of the cervical spine.

K2M also debuted the Pyrenees Translational Cervical Plate, which is designed with a unidirectional ratchet mechanism at each level for increased control over the patient's anatomy.

Finally, K2M debuted the Aleutian Interbody Systems: the Aleutian Transforaminal-Lumbar II Interbody System with a full range of bulleted PEEK interbodies for posterior lumbar applications and the Aleutian Anatomically-Narrow Oblique Interbody System.

Lanx launched its Aspen Flared 5-1 MIS Fusion System designed to promote fusion at L5-S1. The system includes a unique angle on each ventral plate for improved anatomic fit.

Lanx also announced its Timberline Lateral System and medical training program to teach surgeons how to use the system. The system is a complete lateral access fusion system that includes rectangular PEEK interbody spacer devices, a low profile modular retractor system, a fiber optic lighting system and instrumentation to aid in lateral access and implantation.

Life Spine has begun the limited release of six products, including the Aileron, a minimally invasive adjustable interpsinous fixation system. The system is designed to make smaller incisions, rapidly size in situ and reduce procedure time.

Medtronic recently launched the T2 Altitude Expandable Corpectomy Device in the United States and Europe. The self locking expandable vertebral body replacement cage is intended for thoracolumbar spine use and designed to provide stabilization and correction in patients with traumatic or tumor disorder.

Medtronic also launched the Aquamantys Mini EVS 3.4 Epidural Vein Sealer to reduce blood loss during spine surgery. The device is designed to optimize visibility and control epidural bleeding.

Finally, Medtronic introduced the MAST MIDLF procedure, which uses proprietary retractor and cortical bone screw fixation in conjunction with Medtronic's surgical platform of interbody, navigation, neuromonitoring and biologic options. The procedure is a minimally invasive spinal fusion using the midline laminectomy approach.

Orthofix announced the full market release of the Collage Osteoconductive Scaffold, which is a bone graft substitute used for orthopedic and spine indications.

Spineology unveiled its Threshold pedicular fixation system, designed to accommodate mini-open and percutaneous implantation of screws and rods, using an "over-the-wire" technique.

Spineology also launched the SOAR Retractor System, which in includes several retractor lengths and diameters to promote surgical access to the spine with minimal disruption. The system also integrates neural retraction and articulating discectomy instrumentation with the retractor to improve efficiency.

Spine USA introduced the Vault Stand Alone ALIF System, which recently received FDA clearance. The system is designed for use with autogenous bone graft and indicated for intervertebral body spinal fusion in patients with degenerative disc disease up to Grade I spondylolisthesis.

Spine USA also recently received FDA clearance for its S-Lok PC Posterior Cervical System, which was introduced at the NASS annual meeting. The system is intended to promote fusion of the cervical and thoracic spine, and indicated for treatment of degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, fracture and dislocation, revision of previous cervical spine surgery and tumor procedures.

X-spine released the Hgraft Spinal Implant System, comprised of structural allograft implants designed for insertion into the interspinous space for interspinous and interlaminar fusion. The system includes instrumentation for lateral and dorsal approaches.

Zimmer introduced the inViZia Anterior Cervical Plate System, which is designed for increased visualization during implant placement. The system is intended for use in the temporary stabilization of the anterior spine, surging the development of cervical spine fusions in patients with degenerative disc disease, trauma, tumors, deformity, pseudoarthrosis and failed spinal fusions.
