Zimmer's Universal Clamp Spinal Fixation System Receives Clearance for Scoliosis Treatment

Spinal Tech

Zimmer Holdings has received additional FDA clearance for its proprietary Universal Clamp Spinal Fixation System, according to a Zimmer news release. The system is now indicated for treatment with patients eight years old and above who have idiopathic and neuromuscular scoliosis, and can be used in conjunction with spinal fusion surgeries.

The implant offers a pedicle-sparing approach for malformed or small thoracic pedicles while still providing the stability of pedicle screw constructs—the Universal Clamp band spreads contact forces over a greater surface area, which reduces the risk of pulling through the lamina when compared with wires and hooks.
