Alphatec Spine Signs Agreement With Merlot OrthopediX for Spine Surgery Technology

Spinal Tech

Merlot OrthopediX, a Cleveland Clinic spin-off company dedicated to spine surgery innovation, has entered into an exclusive agreement with Alphatec Spine to develop and commercialize bone anchorage technology for the spine, according to a Merlot OrthopediX news release.

Under the agreement, Alphatec Spine will be responsible for the development, regulatory and worldwide commercialization of Merlot technology. The company will initially target European sales networks in order to develop clinical experience and then expand the products globally.

The Merlot bone anchorage platform is based on a fixation anchor with double helical tines, which offer minimal bone disruption compared with traditional spine screws. It is commonly used in patients with fragile bones, such as those who suffer from osteoporosis.

The technology was developed by Isador Lieberman, MD, a former physician with the Cleveland Clinic who now practices with the Texas Back Institute in Plano.
