Spinal Tech

Spinal device company Precision Spine has entered an exclusive technology agreement with Stephen Cook, PhD, to develop spine implants with magnetic technology, according to Business Wire. Dr. Cook is the executive director and chief scientist at the Fellowship of Orthopaedic Researchers in Metairie, La. He has been researching the development of spinal implants based on rare earth magnetic technology for five years. Rare earth magnets are 500 times stronger than ferrous magnets.

Precision Spine and Dr. Cook are looking to take this material and develop applications, such as implants that create dynamic segmental distraction to decompress spinal stenosis without the subsidence or discomfort of implants.
