Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $200,000 to each of three Nevada residents, settling the first case in a long list of lawsuits against the company that recalled 93,000 ASR hip implants in 2010, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report. Johnson & Johnson's DePuy unit issued a worldwide recall of the hip implant. The device, which was made from a cobalt and chromium alloy, released metal debris into patients' bodies and caused adverse outcomes such as tissue death and increased metal ions in the bloodstream.
