Nationwide Health Information Network Component Helps Physicians, Patients to Exchange Medical Records Outside HIEs

Health Information Technology

Many physicians are using Direct Project, a component of the Nationwide Health Information Network, to exchange patient data securely between two points, according to an American Medical News report. Physicians can use the Direct Project if physicians practice in areas without a structured health information exchange or if physicians don't have systems that are interoperable with other hospital and health system software, the report said.

However, Direct Project does not allow one electronic medical record to interact with another EMR, according to the report. Instead, it's just a way for physicians to send patient data, such as lab results or continuity-of-care reports, electronically in a secure message.

Direct Project is accessible to any physician using a system that supports Direct Project, the report said.
