Health information technology professionals should take the lead in ensuring strong data integrity in health information exchanges, according to a white paper (pdf) by the American Health Information Management Association.
Strong HIT leadership is important for HIEs because the process for correcting, maintaining or updating patient information helps to ensure HIEs deliver high-quality data. According to AHIMA, HIT professionals could serve on health data exchange boards, executive committees or in other roles to guide the process.
AHIMA also recommends that HIEs ensure data integrity in the following ways.
1. Establish clear oversight and accountability mechanisms.
2. Establish certain acceptance criteria and patient identification practices as part of an internal review process.
3. Ensure that exchange participants understand how and when corrections will be made to patient data.
