Insider Negligence Causes 39% of Data Breaches, Not Third Party

Health Information Technology

The Ponemon Institute and Symantec Corp. have announced findings from a report titled, "2011 Cost of Data Breach Study: United States," that found negligent insiders were the top cause of data breaches, 39 percent, whereas malicious attacks only accounted for 25 percent. The report is based on the data breach experiences of 49 U.S. companies from 14 different industry sectors. Additional key findings include:

•    Organizations that employ a chief information security officer with enterprise-wide responsibility for data protection can reduce the cost of a data breach by 35 percent per compromised record.
•    Taking steps to keep customers loyal and repair any damage to reputation and brand can help reduce the cost of a data breach.
