Because healthcare reform is setting up incentives for physicians, hospitals, patients, payors and employers to use telemedicine, telemedicine is positioned to be a "key enabler for widespread delivery of cost-effective, resource-efficient and high-quality healthcare," according to a Computer Sciences Corporation report.
The report, which aimed to look at cost containment, improvement of access and quality and other aspects of healthcare reform, concluded with seven recommendations to move forward with telemedicine.
• Develop a telemedicine strategy.
• Start by addressing an immediate problem, such as chronic disease.
• Adopt policy reform early.
• Leverage commercial, consumer technology and products.
• Integrate telemedicine within an overall clinical platform.
• Consider outsourcing solutions such as cloud and software as a service.
• Look for and pursue opportunities that align with an organization's goals but might also be set up by government initiatives.
