Abdominal Muscle Strains for Professional Baseball Players On the Rise

Written by  Laura Miller | January 26, 2012
The number of professional baseball players with instances of abdominal muscle strains increased over the past two decades, according to a study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine.
Researchers analyzed instances of abdominal muscle strains in professional baseball players by reviewing the Major League Baseball disabled list from 1991-2010. There were 393 cases of abdominal muscle strains during that period, which made up 5 percent of all baseball injuries.

The report also found:
•    92 percent were oblique or intercostals muscle strains
•    44 percent were sustained by pitchers
•    12.1 percent re-injury rate
•    Players had a injury rate 22 percent higher in the 2000s than in the 1990s
•    Pitchers averaged 35.4 days on the DL
•    Position players averaged 26.7 days on the DL
