Study: Arthroscopic Removal of Symptomatic Calcium Deposits in Rotator Cuffs Effective

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The arthroscopic removal of symptomatic calcium deposits of the rotator cuff is a safe and effective treatment for patients with shoulder pain when non-operative methods fail, according to an article published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Researchers examined 56 patients with calcium deposits within the rotator cuff for seven years. Fifty-four of the patients received arthroscopic removal of the calcium deposit without rotator cuff repair.

At the seven-year follow-up, all patients were able to return to their baseline level of activity with significant improvement in pain and function scores. Only 3.7 percent of the cases developed rotator cuff tears over the follow-up period.
