Study: Lumbar Disc Arthroplasty Shows Better Results Than Fusion for DDD

Spine

For patients with degenerative disc disease, lumbar disc arthroplasty using the Maverick disc has better outcomes for patients than stand-alone interbody fusion, according to a study recently published in Spine. Researchers randomized 577 patients who either received lumbar disc arthroplasty or anterior lumbar interbody fusion. Both treatments demonstrated significant improvements over the preoperative condition.

Patients who received the artificial disc reported better outcomes in Oswestry Disability Index scores, back pain scores and patient satisfaction. The artificial disc patients also had longer surgical times and greater blood loss than the fusion group.

Hospital stays were similar for both groups and the artificial disc patients reported fewer implant- or procedure-related adverse events. The patients who received an artificial disc also returned to work more quickly.
